  Application Note 84 is a collection of "power circuits" from the years 1996 through 1998 as seen in the pages of Linear Technology magazine. This Application Note collects circuits that can output tens of amps to circuits that can operate a handheld device for several years. In addition to a wide variety of traditional power supply circuits (Buck, Boost, Inverting, Flyback, Linear Regulators, etc.) we include circuits for charging batteries, several Power Management circuits as well as circuits that highlight a very low noise switching regulator.

  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 84 is the fourth in a series that excerpts
  useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine to preserve them for posterity. This application note highlights
  “power” circuits from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through
  issue VIII:4 (November 1998). Another application note
  will feature data conversion, interface and signal processing circuits from the same era. Like its predecessor, AN 66,
  this Application Note includes circuits that can power
  most any system you can imagine, from “server” power
  supplies that generate in excess of 50 amps to micropower systems for portable and handheld equipment.
  Also included are power converters that can be voltage programmed using Intel’s VID code. Charge pump converters, linear regulators and battery charger circuits are
  included here, with Li-Ion batteries receiving extra attention. There are, of course, circuits that cannot be so simply
  categorized. Come browse. I’ll get out of the way and let
  the authors describe their creations.

  Li-Ion batteries, with their high energy density, are
  becoming the chemistry of choice for designers of
  many handheld products. In response to this growing
  trend, the LTCВ®1627 incorporates features optimized for
  such chemistry. For instance, the LTC1627 integrates a
  precision undervoltage lockout circuit that shuts itself
  down when the supply voltage dips below 2.5V, drawing
  only 6ОјA of quiescent current. This prevents damaging
  a Li-Ion battery when it is nearing its end of charge. The
  operating supply range of the LTC1627 is from 2.65V
  to 8.5V; this accommodates one or two Li-Ion batteries
  and 3-to 6-cell NiCd and NiMH battery packs. of small surface mount inductors. For switching noise
  sensitive applications the LTC1627 can be externally
  synchronized at up to 525kHz by applying a clock signal
  of at least 1.5VP-P to the SYNC/FCB pin.
  Figure 1 shows a typical LTC1627 application circuit
  suitable for a single or dual Li-Ion battery input. Note
  that the Schottky diode normally seen on the SW pin
  is absent in Figure 1—the LTC1627 has no need for it, …

  Li-Ion Cell Operation
  The LTC1627, with its operating supply range of 2.65V to 8.5V, can operate
  from one or two Li-Ion batteries as
  well as 3-to 6-cell NiCd and NiMH
  battery packs. Figure 2 shows a typical discharge voltage profile of a single Li-Ion battery. As shown, a fully
  charged single-cell Li-Ion battery
  begins the discharge cycle around 4V
  (it may be slightly higher or lower,
  depending upon the manufacturer’s
  charge-voltage specifications). During the bulk of the discharge time, the
  cell produces between 3.5V and 4.0V.
  Finally, towards the end of discharge,
  the cell voltage drops quickly below
  3V. When the voltage drops further,
  the discharge must be terminated to
  prevent damage to the battery. A precision undervoltage lockout circuit
  trips when the LTC1627’s supply voltage dips below 2.5V, shutting the part
  down to only 5Вµ A of supply current. Maximizing
